I can install a 40yr composition roof with CDX plywood giving the homeowner a 12yr workmanship warranty with the 40yr product warranty for about the same price as a cheap cedar shake (trac wood). These shakes are the cheapest stuff out there and is installed in most housing tracs getting cedar shakes on them now days. They are garbage and I try to avoid installing them. The shakes of choice that I choose to install are the Premium Cedar Shakes that claim to be 100% edge grain, 100% heartwood, 100% clear. There are other premiums out there and if they don't have this actual claim on the label they are of a lower quality. These shakes usually cost $1.50 per ft or more just to purchase the product not including all the other products needed to do the roof. Trac Wood runs around $1.10 per foot. The 40yr composition runs $.55 per foot. These prices do not include the cost of a sizable list of other thing needed to complete a roof installation.

Most people are pretty happy with a 30yr laminate composition. I always give out brochures with photos of products to show their color and I also have a sample board of the product but before a homeowner commits to their color selection I have them pick a few colors from these and bring out complete piece of the product to most accurately represent the color.
