I think her primary motive was containment. My grandmother really didn't like messes or disorder. I think my bedwetting caused her a lot of personal distress. I also think there was an element of punishment to it, mostly because of pointed remarks she often made about my accidents or the rubber pants or diapers.

Mixed feelings is an understatement. I was utterly ashamed and humiliated that I had to wear rubber pants to bed. As horrible as they were, they also were a way that I could have a little more control over the impact of my accidents and not disrupt other peoples' lives as much. And yes, there was a benefit to not waking up in cold clammy pajamas and sheets. Nonetheless, being a 12 year old having to go back to rubber pants at night was devastating to my self esteem.
