 During 6th and 7th grade I just wore pajamas or underpants or both to bed. When I wet then we had to change the sheets and wash stuff. At the end of 7th grade I went to stay with my grandmother for the summer. She really liked order and disliked messes. When I got there I had to help her put a fitted plastic sheet on my mattress. She told me it was for "just in case" made me promise not to wet the bed. (For all the good that promise did.) As I was leaving to go outside she remarked that she might get me rubber pants to wear at night. I didn't know whether to take her seriously or not.

Late that afternoon I came in from outside and found the two boxes of rubber pants on the kitchen table. My grandmother pulled out the one pair and kind of shook them open so I could see them. She said I would need to wear them at night. She made a special point of telling me that she got the 2nd pair in case I wet the first ones.

I felt kind of nauseated and had "bubbles in my chest" when I saw them. I had all evening to think about the fact that I would have to wear them. At bedtime she had laid out underpants, the white pull-on rubber pants and short cotton pajamas pants on the bed. She told me to make sure I put on "all three" pants. I was sooooo ashamed. I sat there for a really long time in just my under pants and pajama top before finally pulling the rubber pants on. It was the first time I'd had to wear them since I was 5. It was just so degrading to be 12 years old and having to wear rubber pants because of my bedwetting.
