I totally relate to your discomfort on warm nights. The rubber pants could be oppressively hot. Though I was reluctant to put them on that first night (because of shame, not discomfort), I was generally consistent about slipping into them when I put my pajamas on. That first night I did examine the pants before I put them on since I had not seen a pair “up close and personal” since I finished Kindergarten. The elastic leg bands made them seem like girls’ underpants that made them so much the more shameful. I was surprised how big they were considering they were Toddler size.

Once in bed I was definitely aware of both the rubber pants and of the plastic cover on my mattress. I felt totally ashamed that I was 12 years old and still needed to wear rubber pants and needed plastic on my bed to keep the mattress from being ruined. I don’t remember lying awake for any length of time.

You said when you got older you would sit and stare at the diapers and rubber pants before you could bring yourself to put them on. What would you think about while you were looking at them?
