This is not a day to day account of our trip, but just random pics that will hopefully give you an idea of what we have found on our yearly Anglo Boer War (1899 - 1902). The war was fought between England and the Boers (South African Dutch speaking farmers). We mostly search the old British Camps at Colenso, Mooi River and Harrismith.
The first pic is a group picture taken at the old railway bridge at Colenso. The British suffered heavy losses at the battles and skirmishes around Colenso fought in February 1899 with over 4000 killed.

The second pic is of a nice Hampshire badge found

I found the following two Royal artillery badges on the left. Wolfgang found the nice buttons on the right.

The following two pictures are of Mike and Wolfgang sorting through the soil for dug artifacts

The next picture is of a nice Horse Bridal Boss Found. I am not sure from which regiment it is.

Stefan, Gerry, Tony, Pierre, Huffie and John having a rest after a few hours in the scorching heat at Mooiriver. We searched an old Hotel here that was demolished in the 1950s (post-Boer War) but no great finds were made. A Bridge stood nearby build in 1866 so we hoped for same great finds but to no avail. The heat was unforgiving.

Digging for bottles at an old ash pit - the ground was as hard as granite and only the youngest of the guys attempted this strenuous work. They found quite a few nice old bottles.

A “Watch and be Sober” badge awarded during the war to British Teetollers.

Pierre and Dave having a discussion on some or other find.

Dave’s 1910 Edward VII Silver Florin (Two-Shilling) that won him the 3rd best find - a Canadian Silver Dollar sponsored by Bill from Lachine.

A few unsorted finds found by someone during the first day…

An extremely rare 85th Battery Royal Field Artillery Canteen-Token found by Stefan that won him the first prize. It was found at the old British Military Camp at Harrismith.

Two Buffs badges depicting the well known Dragon / Griffon.

A Royal Army Medical Corps Badge

My best find: A Scottish Regiment Artillery badge. Mike’s book on British Badges of 1982 gave it a catalogue value of 55 Pounds. I have donated it with all my other finds to Lukas and Tony’s Museum.

Gerry (DINO from the UK) testing his 6 feet height against the Boers!

Having a nice rest at our Bush Camp. We had much fun here at night after a hard day’s work, singing songs, drinking coffee and tee, and telling some very clean jokes…

Regards
Pierre
