sprinkled on the muddy parts (preferably worked in) and covered with the shavings is a big help. I've been using it a couple of years, after doing a lot of reading about it, and I'm sure it saved my birds this year. Our mud, and I'm sure a huge number of unseen bacteria and molds, was especially bad this year. I usually remove the birds from each pen, at least for a few hours, when I treat them, but it was so bad this year I just shut them inside their houses until I was finished, then released them.

Had NO adverse effects from the lime treatment, and lost only ONE bird (other than part of a batch of mama-hatched chicks)from weather-related factors. Of course, that is "so far," and another seige of days-long rain and mud in this heat could change things. Haven't seen mold in the pens with this treatment.

Adding lime also cuts down on flies and smell, which are both problems here when it is wet and warm.
