I get it at our feed store in 50# bags. I feel sure you could also get it at garden centers as it is used as a soil amendment.

I've heard speculation it could burn their feet, but have never experienced that. Of course, I work it in to some extent and put a light layer of shavings on it. No, it doesn't harden the ground--if anything it helps make it lighter. It "sweetens" the soil, opposite of acidic additives.

As with DE, a certain amount of lime is used in a lot of the foods WE eat--especially boxed foods, so it doesn't hurt them to eat a small amount, as I understand it.

If you'll read old time articles, hydrated lime has been used for generations in poultry and other livestock houses.
