I usually use the garden variety lime as I keep my birds in the pens.
In the spring when I completely clean my pens I use the full monty and work it into the soil and let it sit for 24 hours before putting my birds back in there. I use the deep shaving method with all the rain we have had the deep shavings have been a real pain to deal with. I think I now have my roof problem fixed for regular rain fall but the downpours we have been having lately usually consists of major blowing and that I can't protect against. The run off also pours thru the bottom of the pens like a bloody river. We have graded the ground and added a french drain system (it helps sometimes to be working for a construction company)
We went a whole weekend with out rain but oh my the humidity was unbelievable. I had all my chickens out free ranging in the woods to try and keep them comfortable.
