First learned to use it in horse stalls twice a year to sanitize and scour dirt floors. Saw the benefits and then used it in my first chicken coop. Penned birds out of coop first day to let it work. NEVER worked it in, but next day put down 3" at least of shavings. Never had any adverse reactions.

In later years, with the sheep? When using lambing pens (4'X 4')with fresh straw as bedding and that suffered three day occupancies ~ treated those out between occupants
Along with leaving heat lamp turned on and thus speeding the process as I only had 3 lambing pens. :)

Now still do my outside bird runs with hydrated lime, just for sanitation. Usually get shavings down next morning and birds back inside. THEY work it in, not me.

Sorry this is so long, but I do think this is overlooked with new poultry/fowl owners in this day and age. It's so easy to do. And cheap, too. Especially since you don't have to change out your bedding so often.
