Mine start out in clear Sterelite storage box brooders with old bath towels (a lot of "nasty" washloads). They graduate from there to wire bottomed outdoor brooders, then into pens that are dirt with fairly deep litter of oak leaves and pine shavings. Some of their houses have concrete floors and some have dirt floors, but all have shavings in them.
