Subject: Baby Cardinal "rehab"

About three weeks ago, we became aware of Cardinals having problems with young on the ground and one of our cats being close by. We put both cats in the house and put the baby Cardinal in a small tree (not knowing where the nest is in our 2 acres), twice. Seven hours later, around dusk, I noticed they were still having problems though the cats were in the house. I discovered three babes on the ground spread out over 60 - 80 feet in different directions. We knew they couldn't possibly safeguard three babes under those conditions, so we caught them and put them in a small cage in the house.

Knowing I had feed (Kaytee brand for all baby birds) and had the use of my small greenhouse, I felt comfortable with doing this. I'd done something similar a couple of years ago with another variety of bird. Those parents fed their babes for a week in the greenhouse before they flew away. In the morning as I was putting these three in the greenhouse with the top door panel removed for parental access, I discovered the remains of a fourth babe not far from there.

The babes were quite small, about the size of a lemon. One of the babes apparently flew out with the parents that day; the other two stayed with the open cage, though one was outside of it.

The weather that week was VERY stormy, so I took them in at night and placed them back in the greenhouse, but with the cage closed, for several days. I fed them every two hours according to the instructions on the feed (the timing was my own). The parents were staying close to the greenhouse but we didn't again see the first one that flew. After the worst of the storms were over, I opened the cage in the early afternoon and the babes flew out sometime after that. However, that night, they were again nearly on the ground and fluttered for ME to feed them when I was nearby--this was at 8:30 p.m.--so I again took them in for the night. The next morning, I left them in the greenhouse open to the parents so they had all day to adjust. They both left, and we were careful NOT to go near that area for several days.

We've heard these two (their cries are a slightly different pitch from each other) every day, and I've seen both of them several times since, with their attentive parents. They've been with back with the parents for more than a week and are now growing rapidly.
