You are probably right that they are catching their feet in the large grid, and if this is so and the problem is because of an injury, you have a chance to correct it. The leg going out to the side is probably not a slipped tendon. With a slipped tendon, the leg is bent and held up, like you would bend your elbow because it hurts to try to walk with it.

You must get the tendon in place and tape it firmly, with the tape putting stress on it to hold it in place. By a long strip, I do mean about 4", but only about 1/4 to 1/2 wide. Hold the leg straight with the tendon in place and carefully wind the tape around and around, ONLY in the middle of the joint and on itself. DO NOT wind as you suggested. If wound correctly with the tendon in place, the joint will move normally and the babe will be able to use the leg, which I believe is important for proper healing.
