Subject: Brooding Guinea Hen problem - I think

Okay, I think that I have what might appear to be not a problem. But, it will be if the situation continues.

In my main coop, I have guineas and a variety of laying hens. They have two nest boxes. Well, one hen decided to brood and I allowed her some guinea eggs. I marked them and each day took out the extras. She has 7 keets that are a few days old. We sort of barricaded off that nest box a bit so that the keets wouldn't fall out, added a hanging waterer and a small dish for food. I thought that that might work for a week or so until she decided to move them out. The nest box is about 3 feet up from the ground. The hen did this last year and it worked out.

Well, the problem. I have a guinea hen that has claimed the other nest box. I usually collect 4 guinea eggs a day along with several eggs from the motley group of hens that I have.

Now, I had a baby keet (maybe two weeks old) show up dead in the silkie area. So, I think that one of the guinea hens must have hatched it, brought it home and it got separated from her. Not sure if this is the mommma.

But, what to do? Can I pick her up to retrieve eggs? Guinea bites hurt! If I let her have whatever is under her, then the motely chicken eggs will hatch in 3 weeks - I really don't want those chicks. And then I would also have a ton of partially developed eggs. I have guinea eggs in the incubator; but she really needs to brood awhile before I give her those.

I would love a guinea to brood in the coop but I have no extra nest boxes.

I would love some ideas here.
