I do not know the situation about the loft. If you can put the trap inside where they are digging they will automatically go into it. I do that everytime I find where they dig under the slabs. I added a little more wire to the trap that would make it flush against the wall where they are digging. I leave the bottom mostly open without wire. This will also keep the kitties out cause it will be inside the loft.

When you get one I will tell you how to handle them without a smell, or one way to do it.
