Thank you all for making me welcome. I have read every thing online that I could find. Right now we only raise commercial birds like Golden comet and Cornish cross. Therefore we do not hatch our own chickens. Only ducks geese guineas ect. I want to find a better chicken. I do not like the Cornish cross at all! They are so hybrid that they can hardly walk after a few weeks. They are never able to fly at all. You usually have to take there feed away for 12 hours or they will eat themselves to death, literally. We actually lost about 50 birds one time because they all had heart attacks. They do grow twice as much twice as fast as the other breeds but they are not natural. I do not beleive that this is the way God designed them!! The layers are not as bad but they are really, really, really, stupid!!! For the first time we recently got some ameracauna / aracaunas. Nothing real fancy. I was amazed at how much smarter than the hybrids that are the same age. They fly so much better!! When I go out to close them in at night the Cornish and the other hybrids are all over the place but the ameracaunas are almost always inside asleep already. I have done extensive research on all the breeds of chickens. I have consulted all the experts i could find on what chickens woulds be the best. I want very efficient chickens because we do sell a lot of chicken and eggs. We usually raise at least 300-400 broilers a year. All freerange or are at least on pasture. That is another thing i do not like about the Cornish cross is that although they are on pasture thay do not actually eat pasture.
Any way the lighter the chicken is, the more of the feed it consumes goes into eggs. I have decided to try and raise Penedesencas, leghorns, and australorps because of that. I want some sussex because even though they are heavy they are supposed to be good layers, but they are supposed to be good brooders as well. I hate incubating eggs ! I would much rather let a bird do the work. For meat chickens I think I will try White rocks, Delawares and White Wyandottes. My plan is to try each of these varieties and see which one(s)work the best. I will then maintain my own breeding stock and hatch out all that I can use. I will also hatch out extras of each variety and sell them. that is why I want to learn how to sex day old birds. That skill would even be useful for our ducks and geese ect. Does any one have any advice on any of this? What are your favorite chickens for meat and eggs? Does any one know where I can get lessons on how to sex day old birds?
Thank you all for any and all the help you can offer. Thank you for this place.
Isaac
