Subject: Archive Problem and Rebuild Usage

Dear users,

The error was caused by threads' last-modification times being stored with corrupt values (making them appear like older threads than they really are).

The bug in the code has been fixed so no more of this corruption should occur, but the threads in your forums still have the corrupt data.

To address this issue, we put a patch into both the rotate-thread code and the Backup & Rebuild Messages option -- the patch tries to figure out if the mod-time is a bad value and, if it is, replaces it with the date from the first message of the thread.

Note that this is NOT the date of the most recent message in the thread, so it is not truely the last-mod time.

New replies to the thread will update the mod time properly.

The fix we installed in order to remedy some of the effects of the bug; we are now seeing if we can modify the Backup & Rebuild Messages option to retrieve the date from the most recent message of a thread (giving the proper thread-modification time).

However, because the actual cause of the bug has been corrected (we hope), and the patch eases the remaining side-effects, and because replies to the thread fully-fix the thread, if there are too many problems with modifying the rebuild-option we aren't going to (could introduce other problems) -- we'll see.

Also, we've found the problem with the Reply box not showing up in archives and are working on the fix -- it's more complicated than it seems.
