Doing what you're doing is not really a stable method for moving messages around. If you allow replies to archived threads, I believe you can merely post a reply to the thread, which would make it active (and move it into the main index). Then delete the reply. The reason that hand-sorting threads is not very good for this is because it doesn't update thread-times, it only changes the ordering in a list. You also would probably want to use the Earliest option (for thread rotation method) because that removes the earliest ones in the list (instead of "Oldest", by age).

I'm not sure if I helped.

There's no way for you to delete an archive, but I guess I could delete them in your database by hand if you give me your forum id.
