JCB & Turkiye Garanti Bankasi Into Merchant Acquiring

JCB has signed an agreement with Turkey's major bank, Turkiye Garanti Bankasi, through which Turkiye Garanti Bankasi will represent the JCB brand in merchant acquiring operations and processing in Turkey. The new arrangement starts in December 2002.

Turkiye Garanti Bankasi is part of the Dogus Group which boasts the largest operations system and network in Turkey. The bank has 297 branches, and is number one in terms of volume of international credit card transactions and number three in affiliated merchants with a total of 60,500 POS terminals. These merchants will be phasing in JCB card acceptance from December 2002.

JCB has had an agreement with Anadolu Kredi Karti Turizm since 1993, and through this new partnership with Turkiye Garanti Bankasi the number of merchants accepting the JCB card will eventually increase by 38,000.

Turkey, standing between Europe and Asia, has many historical and cultural resources that appeal to travelers from Japan and elsewhere. The new partnership will expand JCB card acceptability significantly in Istanbul and other areas, while the JCB brand will further increase the strength of the bank's merchant network, particularly in terms of attracting Japanese travelers.

JCB Smart Credit Cards on Railway Fares

Railway operators in the Kansai region will introduce in fiscal 2003 a new smart pass that allows the user to ride trains and have the fares deducted later.

The pass, the first of its kind in the world, will record travels on an integrated circuit chip and charge the fares to the user's bank account on a monthly basis. It offers discounts on fares, depending on the amount of travel undertaken.

The card will double as a credit card as well, and offer fare discounts, depending on the amount of purchases the user makes. Electronics maker Hitachi will be responsible for managing users' travel data, and credit card operator JCB Co. for the settlement of fares.

Railway operators Hankyu Corp. and Keihan Electric Railway Co. have already announced the introduction of the pass in the year starting April 2003.

The new pass will add to the existing prepaid smart pass now used in the Kansai region, which also uses an IC chip for storing and deducting credit and lets the user clear the ticket gate by just touching it on the reader.

An industry group expects 90% of train riders will use such smart passes and plans to issue more than 5 million passes in five years.
