Also involved in charge and credit cards, travellers’ cheques, insurance and other financial services. Purchased original Proton licence in November 1996 Smart card scheme name American Express Evolution of scheme Oct 1996-Dec 1998 Pilot with American Airlines and IBM Corporate American Express cardholders, who were issued with smart cards which identified them for airline ticket purchase and billing, check-in and boarding at airports in the USA. Nov 1996- June 1997 Pilot with US Navy aboard USS Yorktown, a cruiser: crew were issued with e-purses for on-board purchases. May 1997- Dec 1998 Pilot with Hilton Hotels and IBM Corporate American Express cardholders, who used special self-service hotel check-in desks and smart cards which bill IBM directly and record loyalty points and room preferences. Some cardholders used the same cards for both the Hilton Hotels and American Airlines pilots. Aug 1997 American Express agreement with ERG, allowing American Express to issue Proton-based ECARD e-purse smart cards in Australia and New Zealand Sept 1997- June 1998 Pilot with US Marine Corps: 2,000 American Express smart cards issued to marines at New River and Camp Lejeune (North Carolina), who used them for weapon check-in/out, embarkation tracking, meal planning, passenger manifests plus an optional e-purse for use in local shops. Oct 1997 - date (on-going) Pilot with Continental Airlines and Hilton Hotels allows Corporate American Express cardholders to use smart cards for fast check-in facilities at six US airports and 8 Hilton hotels. The cards also record loyalty points and cardholder preferences. Nov 1997 American Express makes available its multi-application smart card travel & entertainment file framework under licence. May 1999 Proton World announced as world-wide licensee of file framework along with other smart card industry leaders.
