As well as Hong Kong based companies, the consortium comprises a mix of international companies including Australia, Singapore, Switzerland, USA and the UK. The consortium will supply 1.2 million computer-encrypted smart cards at a one off value of HK$162,689,356. ------------------------------------------------------------ The Hong Kong Immigration Department plans to roll out the new system in the Registration of Persons Offices in mid 2003 and start the region-wide ID card replacement exercise a few months later. ------------------------------------------------------------ Keycorp Ltd also announced its participation in the winning bid for the chip-based identity card. "This project confirms the growing acceptance of MULTOS as a secure operating platform for open smart card solutions" said Richard Cusson, GM Smartcard Technologies, Keycorp. Visa’s certification establishes ECard as an approved service provider for the preparation, processing and distribution of chip card personalisation data. ------------------------------------------------------------ "Visa certification helps position ECard as an attractive outsourcing option for a range of card issuers," said Chris Fendley, CEO, ECard. ------------------------------------------------------------ In giving its certification, Visa has approved ECard’s mass issuance system, which is the basis of its systems integration.
