Preparations for the introduction of electronic smartcards are now well advanced. Many of the current range of card and paper tickets will gradually be changed over to contactless smartcards over the next 18 months. A Quick Ticket machine More credit card machines will be introduced at joint Underground and National Rail stations during 2003 to add value to smartcards. Other touch screen, multi-lingual, cash and bank card ticket machines (‘Quick Tickets cash and cards’) have already been installed throughout the Tube network. Smartcard reader New machines are also in operation on London’s bus fleet and in all local high street ticket outlets. The vast majority of Underground stations now have ticket gates. Smartcard readers have already been fitted to much of the equipment but they will generally not be switched on until smartcards are introduced. For more information about the future of London’s transport, please see About us section at www.transportforlondon.gov.uk How to use the Quick Ticket systemIf you have a valid photocard and need a ticket starting today You can now renew 7 Day Travelcards in just 30 seconds. Introducing a new generation of self-service, touch screen ticket machines at our busiest stations ‘Quick Tickets - cards only’ are credit and debit card machines that sell Adult 7 Day Travelcard Season tickets and other popular tickets, including Carnets at stations in Zone 1. Getting tickets is easy They do not take coins or bank notes. There are no extra charges for using your credit or debit card. Easy and quick to use. Insert your credit or debit card.Select the ticket you want on the touch screen menu.Select ‘receipt’, if required. As soon as the transaction has been authorised, the card will ‘click’ back to the slot. There’s an audible reminder as well as a visual prompt on the screen. Remove your card for safekeeping and to allow for ticket issue to start.Transactions are normally authorised within about 12 seconds. The ticket issue takes a further 10 to 15 seconds.Pick up your ticket (or Carnet tickets) from the scoop together with your white paper receipt, if requested. Buying 7 Day Travelcard SeasonsTickets are dated to start from the day of issue and you will need a current photocard. Customers purchasing 7 Day Travelcards for the first time or wanting tickets in advance will need to go to the ticket office. Touch screens There is just one chore. Before using 7 Day tickets issued from a ‘Quick Tickets - cards only’ machine, customers must write in their photocard number into the space on the top right hand side of the ticket. If the correct photocard number has not been written on the ticket, customers may be liable to a Penalty Fare or possible prosecution, if fraudulent use is suspected. Please remember that 7 Day Travelcards can run for any consecutive period of seven days. Security of credit and debit cardsPlease remove your card from the slot immediately when prompted on the screen and the audible reminder sounds. For your security, cards left in the slot after 40 seconds and those reported lost or stolen will be retained. We regret that under our contract with Barclay’s Merchant Services who authorise transactions on behalf of all of the card issuers, London Underground staff are not authorised to return cards retained in this way. Customers should contact their card issuer.
