Smart Cards Go To Hollywood
------------------------------------------------------------
Fans will soon be able to use smart cards to access Web sites offering behind-the-scenes footage and interviews about the recently released film "Star Trek Nemesis" from Paramount and to play video games based on Disney’s "Treasure Planet." The chip cards are from UK-based Internet plc, which introduced its first SmartFlash cards offering Web-based content earlier this year with a series of five cards aimed at fans of pop star Britney Spears. Initially available via the Internet and at two retail locations in London, a card and smart card reader set sells for $24.95 and a single chip card for $7.95. The SmartFlash chip card readers comply with EMV, the international standard for credit and debit smart cards, and that opens the door for payment card issuers to offer services to SmartFlash customers, Steven Landau, president of Internet plc, tells Cardline/CardFax. While U.S. credit card issuers have not had much luck convincing consumers to plug smart card readers into their PCs, Landau says that is because the applications offered were not compelling. "These are compelling entertainment properties and entertainment drives technological adoption," he says. Landau says Internet plc has had discussions with financial issuers, but would not elaborate.
------------------------------------------------------------
Landau says Internet plc expects to have similar licensing deals within the next year with at least nine musical artists or groups, and will offer chip cards aimed at fan clubs of those musicians. He says the company will begin selling SmartFlash products in U.S. retail stores in the first half of 2003 and projects having millions of customers within a few years. If that goal is realized, he expects there will be significant interest among financial issuers in offering services through the SmartFlash card readers. Landau says the company distributed its full stock of 25,000 Britney Spears cards, but could not say how many ended up in the hands of consumers. He says plans to issue more Britney Spears chip cards have been put off due to Spears’ decision to take some time off from performing.
