ERG and NRMA form smartcard company 17-August-2001
------------------------------------------------------------
The National Roads & Motorists Association (NRMA) Ltd (NRM) and smart card company ERG Ltd (ERG) have formed a jointly-owned company to market and deliver smartcards and other smart devices for a range of applications.
------------------------------------------------------------
The move comes just three days after the ERG-led consortium was chosen as the preferred tenderer to the New South Wales Transport Department's $100 million plus integrating ticketing contract.
-----------------------------------------------------------
ERG and NRMA formed a strategic alliance in May with a view to developing smartcard technology to support current and future services for NRMA's two million members.
-----------------------------------------------------------
NRMA member services chief executive Rob Carter said the new company would deliver smartcards for a range of applications, including public transport from 2003, assuming contract negotiations between ERG and the NSW Department of Transport are successful.
-----------------------------------------------------------
NRMA's membership card will be replaced by a smartcard from July 2002.
-----------------------------------------------------------
"Smartcard applications for NRMA members will co-exist with other applications," Mr Carter said.
-----------------------------------------------------------
It is envisaged that NRMA members will be able to use their NRMA card to access products and services as well as pay for public transport, parking, and motorway tolls once the government's transport system comes on line.
-----------------------------------------------------------
He said NRMA would work closely with ERG to ensure there was interconnectivity of cards across all applications including public transport when they come on line.
-----------------------------------------------------------
The new NRMA and ERG company will issue and manage smartcards while the joint venture will negotiate third party applications for inclusion on the smartcard.
-----------------------------------------------------------
The use of the card is expected to be included in NRMA's new membership rewards program.
-----------------------------------------------------------
At the close of trade yesterday, ERG shares were 1c lower at 96c, while NRMA shares were 3c lower at $3.40.

NRMA and Harvey World Travel form alliance to service NRMA Members' travel needs
-----------------------------------------------------------
· Wide range of exclusive packages for members
· Members access extended to vast network across NSW and ACT
-----------------------------------------------------------
The National Roads & Motorists' Association Limited (NRMA) and Harvey World Travel Ltd (ASX: HWT) today announced a major alliance in which Harvey World Travel will be the preferred supplier of travel agency services for the NRMA's two million members.
-----------------------------------------------------------
In a joint announcement today NRMA CEO, Mr Rob Carter, and Harvey World Travel Managing Director, Mr Barry Mayo, said this was an exciting initiative for both organisations and would result in one of the largest travel alliances in the industry.
------------------------------------------------------------
"For NRMA's members it means exclusive member travel offers and wider distribution throughout NSW and the ACT of all of NRMA's Travel and Touring products - including maps and guides," Mr Carter said.
------------------------------------------------------------
"For HWT it provides access to some two million NRMA members who represent a substantial portion of the leisure travel market in NSW and ACT," Mr Mayo said.
------------------------------------------------------------
The partnership begins on 1 September 2002.
------------------------------------------------------------
In welcoming the announcement, NRMA President, Mr Nicholas Whitlam said that NRMA had a long and proud history of providing travel and touring services to its members.
------------------------------------------------------------
Mr Carter said "This is an exciting new development for our members with HWT's 130 outlets in NSW and the ACT significantly extending NRMA's local presence at a time when banks and others are decreasing their branch numbers."
------------------------------------------------------------
"Members can expect exclusive member only travel offers in the September/October edition of our member magazine, The Open Road. Members will have access to the offers through a dedicated Member Hotline established by HWT."
------------------------------------------------------------
Harvey World Travel Managing Director Barry Mayo said that the close affinity between the service profiles of both organisations would be a major role in the success of the partnership.
------------------------------------------------------------
"Both our groups pride ourselves on the level of service we provide - the NRMA to its members and Harvey World Travel to it customers - and we are committed to ensuring that this alliance delivers exciting benefits to all NRMA members.
------------------------------------------------------------
"The strength of the brand of both organisations and the marketing capabilities of both groups will be a great attraction to key travel suppliers.
------------------------------------------------------------
"Participating Harvey World Travel shops throughout NSW and ACT will be able to assist NRMA members in the booking of these special packages and all their other travel needs," Mr Mayo said.

NRMA Highlights strategic alliances at AGM
------------------------------------------------------------
National Roads and Motorists' Association Limited (NRMA) CEO, Mr Rob Carter, today highlighted the strategic alliances NRMA has developed since demutualisation of NRMA.
------------------------------------------------------------
As part of his opening address to members at today's NRMA Annual General Meeting Mr Carter outlined NRMA had embarked on a number of the strategic alliances and partnerships that will ensure the organisations financial viability.
------------------------------------------------------------
"NRMA's joint enterprise with RACV, known as Intelematics Australia, has won the contract with Holden to provide in-car security and navigation tracking devices. It provides a range of personal safety, vehicle security and information features to certain lines of Statesman and Caprice vehicles," Mr Carter said.
-----------------------------------------------------------
"This contract will progressively introduce Holden Assist customers to crash detection, emergency alert, theft detection, satellite-based tracking, engine immobilisation, diagnostics, remote door unlocking, security and personal safety services.
------------------------------------------------------------
"Telematics fits perfectly with our strategy to become the world leader in motoring, personal mobility and lifestyle services. Telematics will enhance the safety, conveniences, and security of vehicles, enabling drives to be better informed and further enjoy their motoring experiences."
-----------------------------------------------------------
Mr Carter highlighted NRMA had also formed a strategic alliance with smartcard technology provider ERG.
-----------------------------------------------------------
"NRMA and ERG have formed the Smart Card Development Company. Our membership cards will be essential to every wallet and handbag," Mr Carter said.
------------------------------------------------------------
"We envisage NRMA members will be able to use their NRMA card to access NRMA's range of products and services as well as to pay for public transport, parking, and motorway tolls.
------------------------------------------------------------
"Another partnership is our strategic purchase of 25% of Club Assist which provides batteries and car electrics products all around Australia and New Zealand. Club Assist has just expanded into providing services to motoring clubs in international markets of USA, Canada and South Africa providing us the opportunity to be part of the growth of that company in the provision of services to automobile clubs in other countries."
------------------------------------------------------------
Mr Carter concluded that NRMA would continue to look for other partnerships and alliances in the future to provide greater member benefits and to grow member equity.

NRMA and ERG to Form Smartcard Company
------------------------------------------------------------
The National Roads and Motorists' Association (NRMA) and ERG Group today announced they will form a jointly owned company to market and deliver smartcards and other smart devices for a range of applications.
------------------------------------------------------------
The move follows the recent announcement by the NSW Department of Transport that a consortium led by the ERG Group has been chosen as the preferred proponent to design and build Australia's first mass-market smartcard system for public transport.
------------------------------------------------------------
NRMA Member Services CEO, Rob Carter, said the new, jointly owned company will provide the vehicle to deliver smartcards for a range of applications including public transport from 2003 assuming contract negotiations between Department of Transport and ERG Group are successful. NRMA's membership card will be replaced by a smartcard from July 2002.
------------------------------------------------------------
"NRMA formed a strategic alliance with ERG in May with the view to developing smartcard technology to support current and future services for NRMA's two million members," Mr Carter said.
------------------------------------------------------------
"Smartcard applications for NRMA members will co-exist with other applications. For example, we envisage NRMA members will be able to use their NRMA card to access NRMA's range of products and services as well as pay for public transport, parking, and motorway tolls once the Government's transport system comes on line.
------------------------------------------------------------
"NRMA welcomes the State Government's intended move to smartcards for public transport ticketing and will work closely with ERG when appropriate to ensure there is interconnectivity of cards across all applications including public transport when they come on line.
------------------------------------------------------------
"The formation of the NRMA and ERG company and the planned consolidation of applications will ensure that the economies of scale in the issuance and management of smartcards are present, popularising them and making them a viable option for a range of different initiatives in Australia.
------------------------------------------------------------
"The new NRMA and ERG company will issue and manage smartcards. The joint venture will negotiate third party applications for inclusion on the smartcard so that NRMA members have access to an enormous range of services through their membership card. It is envisaged that use of the card will be included in NRMA's new membership rewards program.
------------------------------------------------------------
"The use of smartcard technology for our members will ensure continued high levels of customer satisfaction but also enable us to expand our range of products and services to meet the changing needs of current members and attract new members.
------------------------------------------------------------
"ERG is a highly successful leader in smartcard applications having the expertise in smartcard technology to provide the kind of solutions and enhancements we are seeking for our members," Mr Carter said.
