Chicago Transit Rolls Out Smart Cards
------------------------------------------------------------
Chicago today became the second major U.S. city to launch smart cards for general use in its mass transit system, as the Chicago Transit Authority announced plans to purchase 300,000 chip cards over the next three years for $1.5 million. The vendor is Cubic Transportation Systems, the San Diego-based subsidiary of Cubic Corp. that also implemented the smart card system in Washington, D.C., used by 280,000 commuters. Holders of the new Chicago Card will be able to pay transit fares at 144 Chicago rail stations, more than 2,000 city buses and on 664 suburban Pace buses by tapping the chip card on targets at turnstiles and bus fareboxes. Chicago transit officials say commuters can enter the system four times faster with the contactless chip card than with the magnetic-stripe card now used by 78% of ChicagoĆs 1.5 million daily riders. Commuters, who will pay $5 for the chip card, also will be able to obtain a refund of the value stored on the card if they register their card at the time of purchase. That refund option is not available with the mag-stripe card.
