Date Posted: 00:28:33 11/20/02 Wed http://www.btignitesolutions.com/news/news_releases/nr71.htm 2001 news releases ------------------------------------------------------------ 24 August, 2001 ------------------------------------------------------------ SmartCard loyalty schemes come to schools ------------------------------------------------------------ Thyron’s PayCell terminals used as part of pioneering project for sixth form students in Bracknell ------------------------------------------------------------ SmartCard processing technology from Thyron Technologies is helping to reward sixth form pupils in Bracknell Forest secondary schools for regular attendance, hard work and service in the local community. ------------------------------------------------------------ Using Thyron’s highly successful PayCell terminals, which can read cards without physical contact, Year 12 students are able to register their attendance in lessons by simply placing a contactless SmartCard which has been issued to them, near the reader. ------------------------------------------------------------ Information is then fed back to a computer, which can be accessed by teachers to measure and analyse student attendance and punctuality. Each time the student registers, their smart card is credited with points, which can also be allocated by teachers for effort and taking part in community work. These can then be redeemed for a variety of leisure activities in Bracknell Forest, including a free swim and cinema vouchers. ------------------------------------------------------------ The 90 PayCell terminals form an integral part of Bracknell Forest Borough Council’s Connexions pilot project. This project is being developed and implemented by BT Ignite Solutions in partnership with the Department for Education and Employment and local secondary schools. BT Ignite Solutions, the e-business and communications solutions unit within BT Ignite, worked with a number of best-of-breed suppliers, including Thyron Technologies, to create this innovative solution for Bracknell students. ------------------------------------------------------------ The project uses a contactless SmartCard solution developed by Prepayment Cards Ltd (PCL, formerly ERG Card Services). Connexions Cards, showing the student’s name, date of birth, photograph and a personal identification number, have been issued to every sixth former in the Borough’s seven secondary schools. ------------------------------------------------------------ Tony Eccleston, Director of Education for Bracknell Forest said: "This is a very exciting project for our schools and it opens up opportunities for schools throughout the country. New technology will play an ever greater role in education and I am very pleased that we are leading the way." ------------------------------------------------------------ The most advanced product of its type, PayCell utilises the latest wireless communications technology, such as Dual band GSM and GPRS, and can support 4 separate card technologies, including the contactless cards used in the concessionary scheme. This makes use of MifareTM technology, requiring only that the card is held close to the terminal in order to read and write the data. No physical contact is required. ------------------------------------------------------------ About Thyron Technologies Ltd. ------------------------------------------------------------ Thyron Technologies is the market leading supplier of Mobile Payment Solutions listing major banks among its customers. The company’s advanced range of products includes the PayCell, which is the only mobile, portable or fixed payment terminal offering independence of landline communications, and Financer, a family of intelligent, programmable, portable hand-held card processing terminals for portable EFTPoS, electronic commerce and electronic banking. ------------------------------------------------------------ The products have a full development environment, and Thyron offers comprehensive training courses. The company operates closely through technology partners around the globe through its MAP (Mobile Alliance Partner) Programme. ------------------------------------------------------------ Contact Bill Thompson at Thyron.
