Houston Transit Authority Aims To Use Smart Cards
------------------------------------------------------------
San Diego-based Cubic Transportation Systems has received an $8 million contract to provide transit operator Houston Metro a contactless smart card-based fare collection system for the city’s 1,500 buses and its new 7.5-mile light rail system, which will be online in January 2004. The transit authority plans to issue contactless smart cards, which communicate with the reader via radio waves, after the light rail is running, says a transit spokesperson. It will initially issue 100,000 smart cards, which will cost $3.76 each, says the spokesperson. Houston Metro currently uses a magnetic-stripe fare card system, which Cubic installed in 1993, according to the company. Houston Metro wants to switch to smart cards in order to reduce lines at turnstiles, says the spokesperson. "The mag-stripe cards must be inserted into a reader, and that creates lines," says the spokesperson. Also, mag-stripe readers have higher maintenance costs than contactless smart card readers because they have more mechanical parts that wear out over time, says the spokesperson. Cubic will replaceHouston Metro’s fare boxes with smart card readers, and provide "point-of-sale" devices throughout the system to allow customers to purchase and reload value onto their smart cards, according to Cubic. More than 320,000 riders use the transit system each day. ( 2002-11-12 )
