Cubic, EDS Introduce New Transit Security Gate in Netherlands
Monday September 23, 12:34 pm ET
E2 Gate Delivered On Schedule to Rotterdam's Electrische Tram
------------------------------------------------------------
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 23, 2002--This month, passengers of Rotterdam's Electrische Tram (RET) began using the new-generation Cubic E2 gate. Cubic Transportation Systems Ltd., the United Kingdom subsidiary of San Diego-based Cubic Corp. (AMEX:CUB - News), teamed on this project with EDS Netherlands, a leading global IT service provider to Dutch public transport authorities. The new gates were delivered on schedule to RET to improve passenger security.
------------------------------------------------------------
Travelers using the Marconiplein Metro Station use the customer-friendly E2 gates to obtain access to the train platform. The new gates are part of an integrated security system, which includes closed-circuit television and guards.
------------------------------------------------------------
"With these gates, RET hopes to curb aggression," said Coks Stoffer, director of EDS Netherlands. "At the same time, by installing these gates RET will get relevant information on public transportation usage in order to better serve customers in the future."
------------------------------------------------------------
The E2 gates can be opened by any valid ticket and are compatible with new smart card-based ticketing systems. Paul Middleton, operations director for Cubic Transportation Systems Ltd., said the gates are based on well-proven Cubic technology, which has been optimized for the Dutch market.
------------------------------------------------------------
"This can be seen from the fact that we can accept different ticket types and offer wide gates which are designed for bikes, prams and wheelchairs," Middleton said.
------------------------------------------------------------
The first units of the E2 gate were delivered to RET in early July under an extremely tight nine-month schedule for development, production and implementation.
------------------------------------------------------------
"This fast result was the consequence of special project management and intensive and good cooperation in the common project team," Stoffer said. "Although metros in London and Paris have automatic access control and gates, the situation in the Netherlands has its own specific requirement."
------------------------------------------------------------
The E2 gate is an updated and enhanced version of Cubic's highly successful Passenger Gate, which was originally designed for London Transport. This gate incorporates safety recommendations of the Health and Safety Commission, which investigated the Kings Cross Station Fire in 1987. The gate went into service with London Underground in the early 1990s and has set new standards in safety, reliability and general performance. London Underground and Cubic were awarded an international prize for excellence for this gate. Today, nearly 2,000 are in daily use with London Underground and a similar number on the U.K. National Railways.
------------------------------------------------------------
The E2 gates preserve all the safety features of the original gate while incorporating various enhancements such as small size, lower power consumption, higher reliability, smart-card capability and lower cost.
------------------------------------------------------------
In addition to magnetic tickets, the E2 gate accepts all ISO standard contactless smart cards and the Cubic GO CARD(TM), giving complete flexibility to the operator on card choice.
------------------------------------------------------------
Ray deKozan, chairman of Cubic Transportation Systems, said that this "open architecture" flexibility in smart card choice is significant in light of a worldwide trend toward regional transportation solutions that bring together multiple transport agencies with different ticketing systems.
------------------------------------------------------------
"Interoperability between operators is now achievable," deKozan said. "Cubic is hopeful that this project will be the start of many Cubic installations in the Netherlands, which is in the process of developing a national electronic ticketing system."
------------------------------------------------------------

ERG banks on the NetherlandsElectronics News
------------------------------------------------------------
Perth-based ERG has formed a 50/50 joint venture with the Dutch bank-founded payments processor Interpay that will see widespread adoption of MASS smart cards across the Netherlands.
------------------------------------------------------------
The new joint venture company will acquire the exclusive license of ERG’s multi application smart card solution (MASS) technology in the Netherlands, which supports both contact and contactless smart card technology.
------------------------------------------------------------
This will provide a common infrastructure for cards issuing a reload across the Netherlands, allowing the scheme to be extended to transit operators, tolls, and other organisations seeking to issue multi application smart cards in the Netherlands, according to ERG ceo Peter Fogarty.
------------------------------------------------------------
“The formation of the joint venture is a breakthrough for ERG as it represents the first time our technology has been adopted by major banks and linked to bankcards,” Fogarty said.
------------------------------------------------------------
“The joint venture also means that the Netherlands is the first to totally adopt a common technology solution for the contact and contactless smart card across an entire nation.”
------------------------------------------------------------
“Cardholders of Dutch banks will benefit from having a wide range of applications for a single smart card,” Fogarty added.
------------------------------------------------------------
The move by Interpay to adopt ERG’s MASS technology follows the recent intention of the Dutch banks to adopt the Proton smart card technology as a universal smart card platform.
