Ltd., the largest credit card issuer in Japan, has launched a co-branded, chip-based credit card that offers discounts from all the retailers of the Bugis Junction shopping mall and Hotel InterContinental complex in Singapore. United Overseas Bank, the largest card-issuing bank in Singapore, will issue the Bugis Junction JCB Card. A mascot named Mizu, which means water in Japanese, was specially created for the credit card, according to JCB. The character was inspired by Bugis Junction’s prominent water fountain, according to the company. Cardholders can participate in a loyalty program in which they accumulate Mizu points on the chip for free gifts and vouchers from the Mizu catalog. Every S$10 (US$5.70) charged to the Bugis Junction JCB card will earn cardholders 2 Mizu points. When cardholders make a purchase at one of the more than 165 retailers and food outlets at Bugis Junction, their cards’ magnetic stripes are swiped for the payment transaction. Then the clerk inserts the cards into a smart card reader that will enter and store the loyalty points, as well as record them on a back-end server, according to JCB. Cardholders also will receive benefits when they use the card at the Hotel InterContinental Singapore, including 10% discount at its food and beverage outlets, a free slice of cake on your birthday, and discounted hotel room rates.
