ERG LIMITED 2001-06-27 ASX-SIGNAL-G

HOMEX - Perth

+++++++++++++++++++++++++
The ERG Group today announced that it has won a major $40 million
contract to install and operate an integrated smart card fare
collection system on the public transport system of Gothenburg,
Sweden's second largest city.

The contract was awarded by Vasttrafik AB, which is responsible for
public transport in
the county of Vastra Gotaland. Vastra Gotaland
comprises 49 local authorities, including Gothenburg, with a total
population of 1.5 million. The Vasttrafik System manages 600,000
trips each day on 1,500 buses, 220 trams, 50 trains and 32 ferries.

The new ERG system will enable cardholders to use their cards on all
forms of transport including buses, trains, trams and ferries. It is
expected that 500,000 multi-application contact/contactless smart
cards will be issued in the
first three years of operation and that
more than one million cards will be issued as the system expands.

Under the contract, ERG will deliver a system based on its proven,
highly automated central system and data processing network. The
system will also be designed to enable further smart card
applications to be added to the initial transit application as the
contract includes an option for the Proton e-cash system. Proton is
already licensed to a number of Swedish banks.
Additional
applications expected to be added include payments for parking, taxi
and small value purchases such as food and drink.

The system will incorporate a range of equipment including
ERG-developed ticket processors, contactless smart card validators
and portable sales, validation and inspection devices.
State-of-the-art global positioning system equipment will track
vehicle positions for the automatic calculation of fares based on
distance. A GSM interface on the ticke
t processors for automated date
transfer irrespective of the vehicle's location will also be
included.

A trial of the contactless system will be conducted on bus, train and
tram modes in February 2002. System rollout is scheduled for
September 2002 with full implementation to be completed by January
2003. The operating contract runs for an initial period of three
years and includes maintenance, smart card issuance and central
system services.

Commuters will be able to purch
ase and load value on their cards at
third party networks (such as banks). Opportunities to expand the
number and types of outlets where value can be added to the cards to
include grocery stores, and via the telephone or Internet, will also
be developed.

ERG's Chief Executive, Peter Fogarty, said the Company was extremely
pleased to have been chosen to implement the system. "ERG has
supplied magnetic ticketing equipment and smart card systems in
Sweden for more than 15 years
and we are looking forward to working
together to showcase our advanced smart card technology with our
valued customer in Gothenburg.

"The award of this contract to ERG, which follows an extensive
evaluation process, further increases our recurring revenue from
long-term projects and the footprint our systems have across Europe."

Mr Leif Blomqvist, Chairman of the Board from Vasttrafik, said: "I
am very pleased that our passengers will have a common system where
it will be
easy and simple to travel with the same ticket all over
Vastra Gotaland."

ERG is currently involved in the installation of a number of smart
card-based AFC systems in European cities such as Bordeaux, Cardiff,
Grenoble, Manchester, Oslo and Rome. The Group has won contracts
totalling approximately A$100million since January 2001.
