Northrop Grumman selected the iPaper solution following a comprehensive evaluation of available technologies and systems. ------------------------------------------------------------ "Northrop Grumman is unreservedly committed to strengthening the integrity of our election process and ensuring that every ballot cast counts, and we firmly believe that this solution is up to the challenge," said Cheryl Janey, vice president, State & Local Programs, Northrop Grumman IT. "We objectively looked for voting systems with the best combination of performance, price and an open-platform design that could be easily upgraded. The iPaper solution offered all those benefits and can correct the shortcomings of currently installed voting systems that have resulted in erroneous ballots." ------------------------------------------------------------ Northrop Grumman will offer a complete voting system, including early-voting capability, state-of-the-art precinct systems and optical-scanning absentee systems. The complete election management software programs manage ballot creation, vote tallies and the creation of reports for an election. A smaller but essential component is the audio ballot module that permits disabled voters to vote using audio rather than visual prompts. The system utilizes smart cards to identify both polling officer and voter, as well as a voting device that stores ballot information and voter input. This solution is based on LCD/electronic switch voting technology, which is simple to operate and easy to transport. EMS© (Election Management Software) is fully NASED (National Association of State Election Directors) certified. ------------------------------------------------------------ Associated Press EU Clears Northrop Grumman Purchase Wednesday October 16, 2:09 pm ET European Union Clears $7.8 Billion Purchase of TRW by Northrop Grumman ------------------------------------------------------------ BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- The European Union's head office gave antitrust clearance Wednesday to U.S. defense giant Northrop Grumman Corp.'s $7.8 billion purchase of aerospace systems company TRW Inc. ------------------------------------------------------------ The European Commission said the deal between the two U.S.-based companies would only have "a marginal impact in the European market." ------------------------------------------------------------ The EU said there was no worry of violations because the two companies will face stiff competition from a number of European rivals like the French company Thales SA, BAE Systems PLC of Britain, Alcatel SA and EADS. ------------------------------------------------------------ Northrop's main U.S. competitor, Lockheed Martin, had asked the EU to consider its concern that the merger would leave few alternative suppliers for communication's sensors used in satellites. The sensors are also used in unmanned military aircraft and command and control centers. ------------------------------------------------------------ "Lockheed Martin buys almost all of its sensors from TRW or Northrop. If they merge, we lose a supplier," said Tom Jukowsky, a spokesman for Lockheed. ------------------------------------------------------------ Jukowsky adds his company doesn't oppose the merger but wants to make sure it doesn't lose access to the sensor market. ------------------------------------------------------------ Analysts said the EU cleared the deal because the sensor market is large and highly fragmented adding that Lockheed Martin should have no problem finding other sensor manufacturers. ------------------------------------------------------------ TRW agreed July 1 to a buyout from the Los Angeles-based defense contractor. ------------------------------------------------------------ The deal will make Northrop the nation's second largest defense contractor with projected annual revenues of more than US$ 26 billion and approximately 123,000 employees. ------------------------------------------------------------ Northrop Grumman and TRW had to notify their linkup to EU regulators because their revenue in the 15-nation bloc is above the $250 million threshold, over which all mergers must be investigated to see whether they would violate EU competition rules. ------------------------------------------------------------ The deal still requires approval from U.S. regulators.
