Gibson didn't make LPs during the 1960s, so when the early 70's rock gurus rediscovered the model, there were only late 1950s models available. The new 1970s ones were not up to the same quality. But since the '59 sunburst was soon seen as the "iconic guitar", it became a common practice to take '59 Gold Tops and remove the finish. Trouble was that the maple tops on Gold Tops weren't book-matched (or even flamed) because they weren't supposed to be seen ... so you can sometimes spot their origins. I learned all this from some knowledgeable people on the Northern Light Board a while back ... see it wasn't all flames on NL! :-)
