 I'd like to save the question of whether people are drawn by God for a whole new thread, since I believe it's an important question that shouldn't be tagged on here to the masturbation thread.

Masturbation was once known as "Onanism", and the theory that masturbation is a sin came from the story that God slew Onan for "spilling his seed upon the ground".

When I went to read about this myself, it became clear to me that Onan's sin was not masturbation. Onan's brother had died childless, and under the customs and laws of that society and time it was Onan's duty to attempt to impregnate his brother's widow so that children could be raised up in his dead brother's name and carry the lineage of the dead man.

Onan did indeed "go into" his brother's widow, as he was obligated to do, but instead of completing an act of sexual congress with her he "spilled his seed upon the ground" so that she should not become pregnant. Therefore, Onan was guilty of robbing his dead brother and the widow of offspring, enjoying the widow sexually but denying her her chance of a child to raise up in her husband's name, who would not only carry on the lineage but care for the widow in her old age.

God was so enraged at Onan's refusal of his duty that he slew him.

For so many centuries preachers focused on the spilling of the seed part, and identified it as masturbation, and since God was so angry at Onan then masturbation was a sin. In reality, Onan's sin was quite different, it was a type of rape or adultery in which he enjoyed sexual congress but refused to fulfill his lawful obligation to his dead brother.

can find no other references to masturbation, so by this I conclude that there is no biblical teaching saying that masturbation is sinful.
