I may be mistaken, but I think those adapters go the other direction; i.e., they are made to connect a component that usually goes TO a parallel or serial port, but would be "adapted" to now go to an existing USB port.

Sometimes one can add a USB port to their computer, but even that requires caution because it depends on the motherboard and/or the age of the computer. There's a write-up about the situation at:

Sorry to burst the bubble, but since you indicate the computer is an old one, I'm guessing it can't be done.
