Subject: Examine the candidates and then VOTE

Mr. Collins has been a prosecutor for Charles County for nearly 23 years. Standing up for the rights of victims of some of the most henious crimes one can imagine. He has never used the office as a stepping stone to move onto other positions. He has been critized for being too tough. What is he supposed to be with murderers, rapist, kidnappers, bank robbers? It is directly because of Len Collins' leadership as the State's Attorney that has kept Charles County from becoming PG COUNTY! Who does not like Len Collins? CRIMINALS and CRIMINAL DEFESNSE ATTORNEY'S. The POLICE and VICTIMS of crimes need him and want him and his staff. When a criminal comes into court having spent some $200,000 and Mr Collins assigns a single attorney to prosecute the case and successfully convicts the criminal, I believe the citizens of Charles County have gotten their money's worth. I think the voters have to examine your support of the defense attorney's and convicted criminals and have to ask what does this guy OWE THESE PEOPLE IF ELECTED??? If you are going to side with the defense attorneys and criminals who will represent us the victims?

First and foremost, I stand on the side of justice. That is the job of the State's Attorney and one I have no difficulty with.

I do differ with your assessment of Charles County not being another P.G. County. Charles County is a mirror image of P.G. County 25 years ago. What's worse Mr. Collins is making the same mistakes today the leaders in P.G. county made then. If he continues to do nothing but sit back and allow crime to occur and then react to it through prosecution we will be the next P.G. County.

Lets assume for the sake of arguendo, Mr. Collins is successful in 90 out of every 100 cases he prosecutes. (I doubt seriously he is though!) 90% seems impressive. But he prosecutes only the reported crime which is solved by arrest. The problem is that only 1 out of every three reported crimes is solved by arrest. That brings his 90% down to 33%. But it's worse than that because repeated studiies have shown that over half the crime in this country is never reported. That reduces his 33% to 17%.

Much more can be accomplished through a comprehensive multi-facet approach to crime. That is what I propose, a platform where we have effective enforcement coupled with a strong proactive crime prevention component. Doing so will prevent us from becoming the P.G. County we are rapidly becoming. I am going to do everything I can to keep you from becoming a victim.

I take issue with your contention Mr. Collins has been tough on crime. Why did he allow the person who murdered a woman who worked in his office to get off with 30 year sentence (parole eligible in 15 years)? Why did he allow a repeat offender who attended his fundraiser this summer (with a criminal trial pending) to leave the courthouse without doing one day in jail? He does not sound that tough to me.

Finally, the only thing I owe anyone once elected is to perform the duties of my office in the most effective and equitable way possible.

Dear Debbie - I'm not a criminal and I'm not a defense attorney, and I don't like Len Collins, he's rude and has low moral standards - and by the way, he's a terrible lawyer. Mr. Hennessy is going to be a great new State's Attorney!
