Hi All:

Things have slowly been getting back to normal. I am getting home a couple of hours before I have to go to bed, and I am getting some writing done. It took me a while to find my stride, but the words are flowing better now.

This weekend I hope to get some stuff posted. Actually, I kind of have to if I want to get anything posted. Dewey and his family have graciously invited me to spend the Thanksgiving Day holiday with them, so I will be heading out there for four days. Needless to say, I am excited about that prospect and the rest that it will afford me.

Thanks all for now. I am going to get some more writing done! YEEEEEE HAAAAAAA!

Please bear with me as I indulge in one of my other passions... HOCKEY!

The Detroit Red Wings handed the Anaheim Mighty Ducks their first overtime defeat of the season. The Ducks scored first in the second period, and Detroit tied it up in the third on a goal by Brett Hull. The game was tied at the end of third period and forced the overtime. Sergei Federov scored with four minutes left in the ot and gave Detroit the win.

With a a new coach and a slightly disjointed line up, the Wings are finding their new form. The Captain, Steve Yzerman (beautiful god that he is), watched from the team suite like he always does. He says he is doing well and fully plans on returning to the team in early January. Stevie has been working out 6 hours a day, five days a week at the rink. He looks good and is skating with confidence. When The Captain returns, the Red Wings will really start to heat up.

HOCKEY! HOCKEY! HOCKEY!

You Are a Suspect

By WILLIAM SAFIRE

WASHINGTON — If the Homeland Security Act is not amended before passage, here is what will happen to you:

Every purchase you make with a credit card, every magazine subscription you buy and medical prescription you fill, every Web site you visit and e-mail you send or receive, every academic grade you receive, every bank deposit you make, every trip you book and every event you attend — all these transactions and communications will go into what the Defense Department describes as "a virtual, centralized grand database."

To this computerized dossier on your private life from commercial sources, add every piece of information that government has about you — passport application, driver's license and bridge toll records, judicial and divorce records, complaints from nosy neighbors to the F.B.I., your lifetime paper trail plus the latest hidden camera surveillance — and you have the supersnoop's dream: a "Total Information Awareness" about every U.S. citizen.

This is not some far-out Orwellian scenario. It is what will happen to your personal freedom in the next few weeks if John Poindexter gets the unprecedented power he seeks.

Remember Poindexter? Brilliant man, first in his class at the Naval Academy, later earned a doctorate in physics, rose to national security adviser under President Ronald Reagan. He had this brilliant idea of secretly selling missiles to Iran to pay ransom for hostages, and with the illicit proceeds to illegally support contras in Nicaragua.

A jury convicted Poindexter in 1990 on five felony counts of misleading Congress and making false statements, but an appeals court overturned the verdict because Congress had given him immunity for his testimony. He famously asserted, "The buck stops here," arguing that the White House staff, and not the president, was responsible for fateful decisions that might prove embarrassing.

This ring-knocking master of deceit is back again with a plan even more scandalous than Iran-contra. He heads the "Information Awareness Office" in the otherwise excellent Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which spawned the Internet and stealth aircraft technology. Poindexter is now realizing his 20-year dream: getting the "data-mining" power to snoop on every public and private act of every American.

Even the hastily passed U.S.A. Patriot Act, which widened the scope of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and weakened 15 privacy laws, raised requirements for the government to report secret eavesdropping to Congress and the courts. But Poindexter's assault on individual privacy rides roughshod over such oversight.

He is determined to break down the wall between commercial snooping and secret government intrusion. The disgraced admiral dismisses such necessary differentiation as bureaucratic "stovepiping." And he has been given a $200 million budget to create computer dossiers on 300 million Americans.

When George W. Bush was running for president, he stood foursquare in defense of each person's medical, financial and communications privacy. But Poindexter, whose contempt for the restraints of oversight drew the Reagan administration into its most serious blunder, is still operating on the presumption that on such a sweeping theft of privacy rights, the buck ends with him and not with the president.

This time, however, he has been seizing power in the open. In the past week John Markoff of The Times, followed by Robert O'Harrow of The Washington Post, have revealed the extent of Poindexter's operation, but editorialists have not grasped its undermining of the Freedom of Information Act.

Political awareness can overcome "Total Information Awareness," the combined force of commercial and government snooping. In a similar overreach, Attorney General Ashcroft tried his Terrorism Information and Prevention System (TIPS), but public outrage at the use of gossips and postal workers as snoops caused the House to shoot it down. The Senate should now do the same to this other exploitation of fear.

The Latin motto over Poindexter"s new Pentagon office reads "Scientia Est Potentia" — "knowledge is power." Exactly: the government's infinite knowledge about you is its power over you. "We're just as concerned as the next person with protecting privacy," this brilliant mind blandly assured The Post. A jury found he spoke falsely before.

Hello All:

Well, I've managed to leave the office two nights in a row at a more or less decent hour. Last night I got a little bit of writing done while watching the hockey game. HOCKEY! Detroit beat Tennesse, 4 -1. Good game.

Tonight I am actually going to get a few hours in on the keyboard. I can't say that I am back up to speed and that what I am producing is going to withstand a review, but at least I am putting words down. My big goal is to have the weekend free so I can just write. We'll see how it works out.

That's all for now.

[Deep Sigh of Depression]

Hi All:

Yesterday's election results were, at least for me, a little disappointing. Dubya and the Republicans now have control of all three branches of government, so I guess we are pretty much fucked for the next two years. Makes me want to slit my wrists to think what is going to happen starting in January 2003. The boy is not bright, but he did manage to pull his party together and stompt the crap out of social progressives and Democrats. We can only hope that Dubya manages to blow himself up while playing with a hand-grenade in the Oval Office.

I am quite partisan and rather vitriolic when it comes to politics. Between Dubya, Cheney and Ashcroft, we might as well say good-bye to personal freedoms and liberties. Any inspiration I had to write has been drilled out of me with the election results, and just when my workload started to decrease. Things are too gloomy in my mind right now to be creative. My sense of hope and optimism has taken a bad hit, and... well, I hope America gets exactly what it deserves with Dubya and Gang in control. Shit! We are truly fucked. Please, let Collin Powell give Dubya a grenade to play with!

Subject: Music Review: Ryan Adams' "Demolition"

Author:

Date Posted: 19:43:33 11/07/02 Thu

Hello All:

Whenever I am programming or writing, I listen to a lot of music. At work and at home, I scan music services to see what is new out there. Music@Netscape (formerly Spinner) and WinAmp sometimes have some good material. Recently, I heard cuts from Ryan Adams' "Demolition" and it is good. I am a fan of his since the release of "Gold", and "Demolition" is no let down.

Ryan Adams is what you would get if you mashed Neil Young, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and Bonnie Rait into one person. There is a bluesy-folksy-county-punk aspect to his songs that is unique and refreshing. The genre is impossible to pick out, but you can tell that he borrows a lot from the 1970s electric-folk revival (think Credence Clearwater Revival meets Lou Reed). However, this is not a simple reharsh of earlier styles. No, no, no... Ryan Adams blends this into his own distinctive sound. It just feels old and familiar as if you were listening to a true classic rock radio station, and yet it stands apart as something new.

You can check out the entire album at the following web site
http://channels.netscape.com/ns/music/ch/songs_sessions.jsp?floc=MU-SONG-HOME-RADAM
Cut and paste this link into your browser. You'll also need the latest Real Audio player, and that is free.

This gets 3.75 concussions of 4, and thus comes highly recommended.

(I rate these based on the number of times I bang my head against my desk to fix my headphones jack).

Enjoy.

Subject: "JackAss: The Movie" - Vile, Reprehensible, Repugnant and Worth Every Penny

Author:
Drake
[ Edit | View ]

Date Posted: 10:47:43 10/28/02 Mon

Hello All:

I am cultured, educated and possessed of many skills. Why, you may be wondering, would I ever go see a film like "JackAss: The Movie"?

First, a group of friends kidnapped me to drag me away from programming for a while. Very thoughtful of them. Second, I turned most of them into “JackAss” fans against their better judgments and collective will. Third... well this review tells the third reason.

There is nothing, and I mean nothing, to recommend this as a film. The sequences are little more than taped together, poorly shot video montages with no common thread or logic (except for one fact: see next paragraph). There is no acting in this film. There is no direction or directing in the movie (except for one fact aspect: see next paragraph). "JackAss" seems arbitrary and a rudimentary study in what not to do when making a real-life film. With all that said, I highly endorse this film under a couple of serious caveats.

This movie is about a group of guys hurting each other and themselves for their (and our) amusement. They know full well what they are getting into, and this is why this movie is not horrific or completely sophomoric (although it is close regarding the latter). Johnny K. and the Gang make no pretense or fake that they were duped into performing these stunts or acts of reckless personal endangerment. They are violent toward one another, merciless to the extreme, encourage stupidity to dangerous levels, and seem to have a great time doing it. HOWEVER, their sense of friendship comes through. Even though they laugh like loons at one another's self-imposed plights and sometimes bloody reward, they do not act out of crass, malignant intent. How can they? They readily accept these dares, but even so the intent (while they do aim to damage one another) is to amuse themselves and us for a brief period. Their laughter, and mine through at least 75% of the film, is heartfelt and real.

Once again, there is nothing to really recommend this film... unless you enjoy grotesque, obscene and vulgar humor and stunts. This film has that in spades! "JackAss: The Movie" does get around to answering one age-old question I have had for years: What is the end result of snorting wassabi?

Rating: 3 out of 4 Concussions.

Rated "R" for very good reasons. 80-minute running time. Starring the cast of the "JackAss" television series from MTV (no longer in production). NOT RECOMMENDED FOR TEENAGERS OR ANYONE ELSE WHO DOES NOT HAVE A FIRM GRIP ON REALITY.

Respectfully Reviewed,

Drake

Subject: Are You Part of the Problem?

Author:
Drake

Date Posted: 23:33:17 10/23/02 Wed

Hello All:

Yesterday 9 of the 13 backbone servers for the Internet were assualted through what is known as a "Denial of Service" attack (DoS). For one hour 9 systems were halted in their ability to serve web pages, route traffic and send email to their destinations. This is a significant attack against the very heart of the Internet. For those of us who gain so much enjoyment and use from the Internet, please take this next part very seriously.

If you surf the Net without the use of a good personal firewall, then there is a pretty good chance you were part of the attack. This depends on whether you use Instant Messages (IM) or Internet Relay Chat (IRC) programs. AOL IM and MSN IM are some of the most common. Mirabilis IRQ is a popular IRC as is iChat and MIRQ. There is an inherent danger in using these programs for a number of reasons. It has been proven that IRQ, many IRC servers, and most IM servers are host to "silent servers" where elite hackers tend to lurk. They scan all incoming system connection requests and check to see if there are unguarded, open ports. If they find an open system, possibly your computer that is not protected, they deliver a small program called a "zombie trojan" that then nests in your computer. You can't see this program unless you know what to look for and they often are inert until given a specific command. Hundreds of thousands of these zombies have been distributed.

The creators or administrators of these zombies then wait to send out the silent command. The command entails telling the trojan to send a request for service to a hub server. This command can be nested inside web pages or in pop-up ads. Your system then responds by making the request to the designated server. It is a small packet of data that is sent along and it waits for a response. However, these zombies are instructed to send out hundreds or thousands of requests, and you really won't notice the traffic on your system because the requests are very tiny packets. The machine that is getting requested, or pinged, can handle a certain number of these and return the confirmation. The DoS happens when tens of thousands of requests all come in at one time. This overloads the server bandwidth, and the server literally disappears from the Internet. It is not shut down, it just can't get out to the Internet. There are, by what I have read recently, over one hundred variants of these zombie trojan programs.

The upshot is that you may have unwittingly taken part in this massive DoS attack. If you do not have a good personal firewall, like ZoneAlarm (which is free), and you use IMs and/or IRCs, then you may well be part of the problem. Using the Internet is not a right: it is a privilege. It also comes with the responsibility of every user to adequately take steps to insure they are not causing harm to the Internet. This is a shared resource by everyone in the world, and we all have to do our part. Thus, here are the steps EVERY Internet user should be taking:

1) Get a good virus scanner, and keep the virus pattern files up to date, and monitor all incoming connections including email;

2) Get a good personal firewall to monitor who and/or what is trying to sneak into your system;

3) Avoid using IMs or IRCs until the providers take steps to root out the silent servers and secure their systems;

4) Disable Active X and scripting capabilities in your web browsers - yes, this will make it impossible for you to see some parts of the web, but is the risk worth it?

5) Get a pop-up ad blocker (Pop-up Stopper is good and free)and this provides not only the benefit of thwarting silent commands nested in pop-up ads, but it also frees you have having to contend with the ads.

These five simple steps can help reduce the number of DoS attacks that go on every single day, and often multiple times a day. Some sites are targeted daily. There is no good reason why the evil elite hackers do this except that they can. I know some of the good elite hackers who work tirelessly to stop these "Zombie Masters" and end the DoS attacks. However, their work is made even harder by people who do not adequately protect their systems. Use your computer wisely, use the Internet wisely, and we will all benefit in the long run.

For more information and a detailed explanation of what is occurring, please visit Gibson Research Corporation ( or www.grc.com ). This is our responsbility... let's not let a few wanton creeps wreck it all for everyone.

Thanks,

Drake

I will be off-line for possibly three days as I rebuild several of my computer systems and reconfigure my entire network. I also have to install a new server os at the same time. However, I will be checking my email periodically throughout the day on a a crappy little laptop.

Needless to say, my writing has to be put on hold during the interim. This is primarily for work-related reasons, but I will see a lot of benefit in the long run.

Please bear with me while I go through all of this system upgrading and upkeep.

As some of you may know, I have been working on a program for the last week or so. I've gotten it to the point where I need some "out-of-house" testing done. This program really isn't anywhere near full beta stage yet, but I need input.

The program basically will take a text file and apply HTML formatting to it without having to use an HTML editor. It includes some very basic tags, and also the opportunity to apply Cascading Style Sheet formats. This is the concept at least.

Right now the major functionality is disabled. Files can be opened (except Word files for the time being) and viewed. However, files cannot be saved, and the Apply HTML formatting button does not work because of the obscene amount of garbage it produces right now. What I am looking for is a few brave souls to run the setup, install the program, and look at the interface design and concept. There are many parts that do work... and some of it is kind of cool. I need to know what is good, bad or indifferent about the program.

Once the program is completed, I will post it to an FTP site for free distribution. All of the files have been diligently scanned for viruses and other nasty things. All of the installation and program files are clean. Furthermore, you will get some minor OS updates up to Windows 2000 (SP 3) that will increase the funtionality and/or operation of some programs.

This is a very limited delta test. I will only accept the first three or four volunteers. Thus, if you are brave... have a go! Don't worry, the program comes with an uninstall routine so it can be wiped out of your system with no problem.

Thanks,

Drake

I traveled down the sky a ways
And saw the colors from above
Everywhere shapes of every hue
Teased and tickled my eyes
As though I were staring perforce
Into the depths of my tawdry closet
Where can be found a display
Of what can only be considered
The result of a large, ill beast
Having eaten too long upon Skittles
And erupted its gullet straightaway
Onto the unsuspecting cotton mix shirts
A mighty and proud "Technicolor Yawn"
Dripping and splattered with a garish glee
That takes no thought of what occurs
When the eyes try vainly to absorb
Colors too many and too varied at once

Fall in Michigan is like that...
Sometimes.

Greeting All:

There is a phrase in programming that I love to live up to in full measure: "Creeping Elegance!" Sometimes this is called "Feature Creep." Basically, it is the inability of a programmer to stop looking at something and wonder how it can be improved... or completely fouled up (at times it is one in the same).

Anyway, I found a really cool free guestbook script and page templates, so I added it to the site. I really recommend this for anyone looking for a guestbook because it was easy to configure, install and get running. Look for the free guestbook at Proxy2 It is worth.

Okay, I am going back to tinkering for a little bit.

Hello All:

First, let me get the bad news out of the way.

Tony's Journal is being discontinued. Why? Well, as I sat writing it, I realized that it undermines what is going to be coming up in FHO 2. I began to see how knowing too much about Tony at this time removes some of the developments in the next big story of Chris and the gang. I am still writing it, and I will probably post it after I finish FHO 2. Depends.

Now for some good news...

Did you ever get that feeling that you left something incomplete? I did. Danny's story expanded to include two new short stories. The second one is now posted and it is entitled Soul Searching. Part III should be done in a few days. Strange premise, but I really like the characters.

Enjoy!

Greetings All:

The web site had undergone a minor update.

One important announcement:

There is a new story starting. For those of you who asked for it, here it is: Tony's Journal. Yep, that's right. Tony get's his very own story... of sorts. It's kind of an experiment on my part, but I wanted something else to do while I edited FHO.

As far as FHO goes, I will post the edited version when I get a complete section done. There is a bit of work involved since I am including some revised content for a number of reasons (and most of them are exciting reasons).

Enjoy!

When I first heard about FHO on Dewey's board I was stoked. When I heard it was now posted, I was even more stoked. Then I started to read it, and the stokage got out of control. What can I say about the greatness of FHO? It's all great. I love, well everything, but here's some stuff I can pick out:

1. Tony is one of the coolest characters I've encountered (and I read way too much). I love his life philosophy, his humor, freakish intelligence and all that other good stuff. Everyone's great though. I really think you made excellent and complex characters.

2. I love that someone wrote a story about Chris. Let's face, it, Dewey's too lazy to do it (ha ha, just kidding) and I always wanted to hear more from the guy. I honestly don't think Dewey could have done better. I totally love and respect that dude's writing, so that's like a major compliment.

3. The length! So long! Short stories are lame (not real Short Stories, novels that are too short), and so are stories that aren't finsihed. You posted it all pretty much at once, which is awesome. I know I probably wouldn't have made it through some of the later chapters if I didn't know one way or another the end was coming and at least there'd be come type of closure. Hopefully, that lets you know how effective the emotion you infused the story with was. Jumps from the screen right into your heart.

There's more, but I think I'll stop crowding up the board. One more thing, there's a part II?!!! That is so sweet. I can't wait to read it...

Word of warning: chapters 57 & 58 are the end of the story, and those will be posted in a couple of days. Then it is edit time, and I will announce when significant revisions have been included... and there are some.

Be well all.

Drake
