Subject: My Kia - good car

I read a lot about how bad Kia's are, but my 99 Sephia has been a good car. Here is the history of my car:

Bought new in May 1999

Had a recall on the fuel pump (which causes the stalling that many people complain about) dealer fixed it without any problems.

At about 12k the front brake pads were worn out. Brake pads should last about 40k-50k. So I replaced them with AFTERMARKET quality brake pads. People complain about the crappy brakes yet have them replaced at the dealer with the same crappy pads, that does not make sense.

No problems till about 40k when the battery died. Again the factory battery is an often-mentioned complaint. I replaced it with a quality battery from Wal-Mart for about $55.

I now have 6-year-old car with 82k miles. With no problems and it runs great.

I don't take my car for service to the dealer or to those quickie oil change places. I replace my own oil and use Mobile One Synthetic oil and I buy only high quality oil and air filters.

I think many people who buy cheap cars don't have a lot of money left over for proper maintenance and that is a big contributor to the bad experience they have with the car. Like my friend who owned a 99 Sportage, his engine blowup at about 60k. Why did his engine blowup? No oil. Why no oil? He had not change and checked in over 20,000 miles. Why? Because he was living paycheck to paycheck and did not have money left over after making the car payment.
