Author: Joe (No local Kia Dealer?? Too bad!!)
Subject: Poor Warranty Service

Bought a used 2002 Magentis through a Hyundai dealership in Campbell River. Car was still under 5 yr/100K km warranty. Noticed some hesitation in shifting and saw Kia dealer in Nanaimo at 96,000 km. Dealer could not check problem as service technician was not working that day. Asked me to make appointment for another day. This meant another 300 km trip to get it checked and dealer did say if it gets over 100,000 km before the test, warranty will not cover. At 99,800 km, check engine light came on. Went to Hyundai dealer (Kia Magentis is same as Hyundai Sonata) where car was purchased and they checked fault code. Showed transmission shift sensor was faulty. Called Kia for warranty and was told I must have it checked by Kia service shop as Hyundai results are not valid. They would cover under warranty if slightly over 100K km. Phoned to set up appointment in Nanaimo (300 km round trip) and asked if they would have sensor in stock to complete repairs in 1 trip. Sensor not a stock item and will not bring it in until they analyze problem. Kia Canada would not help either. I asked them to supply the part only and I would look after cost of installation locally at my expense. This was denied. This meant it would take 2 me trips (600 km) to replace a $60 part. Informed Kia I will spend the money saved in gas to inform others of type of service to expect. My advice, do not buy Kia product if you don't have a local dealer.
