Subject: Kia Rio RX-V Canada

This is long but worth the read.

Thought everyone I know would like to hear about Kia Canada and Bay City Kia of Port Coquitlam, BC Canada
This is a letter that I have emailed someone out there on the Internet at Kia.

1. Complaint

I have 2 issues. The first is the car, a Rio RX-V. The second is the service at Bay City Kia.

Here's the history of repairs done to my car and the treatment we have received at this dealership. All is backed up with work orders, emails, wittnesses and of course the car itself.

Leased car March 4, 2003

Bay City

April 1, 2004
• Clutch pedal squeaks.
• Clunking noise from front right tire area.
• Car bucks at all speeds.

Solution: New clutch and cable, same problem.
New links, same problem.
Car didn’t buck for them.

Daewoo KIA Bby 3 days / 8 hrs ea.

Days after returned to Bay City because of a thump and was told the motor mounts were loose and that I would have to return to Daewoo (now Pacific KIA)to have them tightened because of the warranty they couldn’t do it. I did so but was told at Daewoo that it wasn’t the motor mounts but something else. Never told what.

August 17, 2004
• Rear wiper button turns on front wipers.
• Turn signal arm doesn’t turn off the signals automatically on corners.
• Radio sound cuts out intermittently on some speakers.
• Clunking noise from front right tire.
• Fuel pump recall
• Trany leak.

Solution: New wiper motor.
Turn signal left to wear in.
New radio, same problem.
New strut on front right tire, same problem.
Tightened bolts on trany.

Bay City

At some time was in for another clutch adjustment, sensor replacement, car bucking/ replacement of spark plugs (was told that one of the spark plugs was gunked up due to a possible bad ring and no they weren't going to fix that) and other services between August 2004 and May 2006.

May 20, 2006
• Clutch problems.
• Drivers seat sliding.

Solution: Adjusted the clutch.
Ordered seat base.

Bay City

Called, visited Bay City to see if the seat replacement was in a number of times. Once missed an appt. for installment of seat. Many times I had to take time off work as they swore it was the right seat this time only to see it was the wrong seat yet again.

June 24, 2006
• Replaced seat base.

Seat replaced with the wrong seat base. Ordered again.

Bay City

August 9, 2006
• Replace seat base.
• Drivers door handle is hanging off the car.
• Rough idle.
Solution: Wrong seat base again.
Was told the door handle had been replaced with new and painted. It was the old door handle, not painted and now scratched badly. Was told I must learn how to open the door with the handle properly.(Huh?)
Ordered new fuel pump.
Window wouldn’t roll down after service.

Bay City

August 12 2006
Solution: Window channel replaced. I had told them this wasn’t the problem and that in the past when this window had been taken out it never set back in properly. They suggested lubing the window and channel and I refused that. Seat base not in.

Bay City

August 26, 2006
• Rough idle.
• Window stiff.
• Door handle.

Solution: Replaced fuel pump.
Replaced window regulator.
Painted and replaced door handle.
Wrong seat base ordered again.

Bay City

August 31, 2006
J. emails partstech@kia.ca about the seat base.

September 26, 2006
J. emails S. about part numbers re: seat base.

October 1, 2006
• Shifting problems with clutch.
• Car bucking (has done this intermittently since I got it).
• E brake not holding.
• Right wiper knocking.

Solution: Adjusted clutch.
Car didn’t buck for them.
Tightened E brake.
Adjusted wiper blade back to position.
No new seat base.

Bay City

October 27, 2006
• Hatch back handle is sticking.

Solution: Lube it.

I spoke to J. about it being 6 mths about this seat base. I insisted that he give me numbers for S. and G.

Bay City

October 30, 2006
I email both S. and G. trying to get someone moving on the seat base. I receive an email from G. telling me he’ll wait for J. to get a hold of him. I told him I wanted HIM to do something about this.

November 3, 2006
G. replied to my email saying he had just spoken to R. and that they were working on my car at that moment and that it would be fixed by the end of the day. They didn’t have my car and I told G. this.

Novenber 3, 2006
R. phoned me to explain the miscommunication and told me they had constructed a new proper seat for me out of 2. One being the seat base that was originally in my car. I told him I’d be there in 20 mins and how long would it take? 1 hour he said. We suggested 5 months ago that they make a new seat out of my seat.
My husband and I met there and asked to see the seat base. It had been sitting around for 6 months and I wanted to make sure it was still in good condition. We waited 25 minutes and during this time R disappeared. No sign of the seat they were, “just cleaning up”.
We have waited 6 months for this to be resolved. I went to the reception and asked to speak to the owner and was told he was in a meeting. Shortly after I started hollering about the service at Bay City, R. came around the corner asking, “Where did you go?” “I have had enough”, I told him. I left the car there for them to work on and expect to pick it up in the morning.

Bay City

November 4 2006
Arrived at Bay City to pick up my car with a bright yellow sign that reads, "MY FIRST AND LAST KIA, A LEMON. COURTESY OF BAY CITY KIA!" That sign is still in my back window. People see it, ask questions, agree, and honk. Customers waiting for service tell me all about their problems with Bay City Kia. I'd like to think potential buyers left because they saw that sign.

We asked to speak to the owner and was told he wasn't in but to call Monday and he would help us. Now it is Monday and they called to say today isn't good for M., how bout Tuesday at 3? We agreed due to lack of choice but once again we are being put off and put out. My husband drives our tractor trailer every night to the interior and back, this change of appointment means he won't get his much needed down time. And I have a class that I will have to miss.

2. Request

I would appreciate it if you would do something about this dealership. I'm not the only ticked off customer. I have been lied to by service managers, had inept mechanics work on my car and laughed at by my original salesman.

I don't know if I am stuck with this leased car or not. I am going to look into that. In the mean time, I will have no problem driving it and my sign, "MY FIRST AND LAST KIA, A LEMON. COURTESY OF BAY CITY KIA!" from Powell River to Prince George, malls, recreation centres, grocery stores, libraries, Home Depot, work, down town Vancouver, I am even thinking about a roadtrip to Edmonton. And of course stopping in at Bay City Kia regularly for information, service and just to say hi. All with my sign in place. In my spare time I plan to tell everyone I know by way of the Internet about the horrors of owning a KIA!

Mr. & Mrs. T. Harrison

PS
To update this now... It is Tuesday and I have spoken to the owner of the Bay City KIA Dealership. So far they are offering to trade in my car for another at cost and maybe $2000. off my buy out price of $3440. I'm holding out as that's not good enough. I can always use a good sign in my back window.
B. Harrison
