Subject: Geoffrey Chaucer married Phillippa Swyndon...
In reply to: Alienor 's message, "Brother- in-law huh!? Small wonder Henry Lancaster added to Chaucer's annuity. Probably wanted to make sure that he got top press coverage. What a pity that Shakespeare spilt it for him" on 21:33:04 02/28/01 Wed

the elder sister of Katherine Swynford. John of Gaunt married Katherine after the death of his 2nd wife Constance of Castile. Katherine had been his mistress for many years and Henry VII is related to her and John on his mother, Margaret Beaufort's side.
There is a certain amount of evidence to indicate that Philippa was John of Gaunt's mistress before marrying Chaucer.( See "Life and Times of Chaucer" by John Gardiner) Philippa gave birth "soon" after her marriage. John had gone to war and perhaps he sought to have his pregnant mistress well taken care of in his absence and possible death. John of Gaunt made many costly gifts to Philippa some in conjunction with gifts to Geoffrey and some separate of him. John also made a VERY large cash settlement on the Chaucer's eldest daughter Elizabeth and later made several large endowments to her abbey when she took her vows. Seems as if he was taking care of his daughter rather than providing for the daughter of a good friend. All circumstancial evidence I know.. but if there is a next life I plan to look up John and get the scoop!
