Hi I am new the message board, very excited to have a place to talk about my love, my babies, my rabbits!
I've been a rabbit owner for about 1.5 years. It is truly an uphill battle with bunnies, but worth every minute of it! And i must say, the problems I have had (skin mites and muddy butt) have been cake.
I recently moved in with my boyfriend, Jarrell, and also moved Timothy, my first rabbit, with me. He was a joy! He loves his mommy and daddy, he loves to play and romp and get into mischief, but generally a very good little companion. Jarrell and I are out of the house for a good 12 hours (7am-7pm) and Tim is left alone, and with stupid daylight savings, sometimes in the dark for a few hours. Of course, he has shown no sign of depression or any mood change for that matter, but Jarrell and I just had to muck up our lovely home by bringing in a new friend for Mr. Timothy. Last Saturday, we all (yes Timothy included) packed into my car and drove pretty much up and down the southwest coast (ha Sarasota to Port Charlotte) of FL in search of our perfect little friend for Mr. Timothy. Well we found him, a sweet as pie lop (not sure if he is mini or dutch) in a PetSupermarket. I know, most of you rabbit owners are scoffing at my decision to by from a pet store, especially one that sells unneueterd/spayed rabbits. Well, thats where I got Tim, and I couldn't have asked for a better pet, so I stuck with what I knew. ANYWAYS.... The introduction was wrong from the getgo. We put Timothy into the tank with the newbie, who we named Rocco, and a few stray guineas, no other rabbits. That is the best meeting place they could offer us. Nothing to drastic. Rocco was used to other rabbits, he was the last of 3 they had, so he had just lost his mates. He scampered right up to Tim, sniffed him, stomped his little feet and scampered away. Tim did nothing, but sniff the tank, in pure shock of it all. I think the problem there was, that tank was Rocco's territory, so not neutral territory, which I have read is where they should meet. So then we take Tim and Rocco and put them in the small box we brought Tim in. IMMEDIATE HUMPING!! Tim mounted him so quick it was scary. Even though PetSupermarket only get males, I flipped baby Rocco and checked to make sure, and yes he is a BOY! So we thought, " oh they are in a such a little box together, so close, maybe that's why." so seperate boxes 1/2 the car ride home and the other 1/2 together. No humping but I was petting each of them. Well it's been 3 days since the introduction and all Tim wants to do is HUMP poor baby Rocco!! and Tim is no little bunny. I mean he is probably a good 3-5 lbs and very strong. Rocco is maybe 1-2 lbs with very little strength. He is so timid, doesn't try to fight anything, even when I go to pick him up he doesn't kick to get away for anything! Tim was NOT like that when he was a baby, he has only gotten accustomed to being picked up, b/c i constantly do it. So Rocco is this meek little man, so sweet though, and either runs from Tim or gets humped. and Tim doesn't just mount him from behind, however he can get his legs around him! And Tim makes little grunting noises, which I thought they made when they were "courting" another rabbit, in my case he courts my legs sometimes, but never humps. But no fighting. So i don't know if Tim doesn't realize that the baby is a boy b/c his testes haven't dropped yet, or what! and we have a spray bottle, and Tim ends up being soaked at the end of a play session!
Tim will be getting neutered in a week, so hopefully that will calm him down. He has also started SPRAYING! Never did that before once. If I play with Rocco then go over to Tim, he sprays me! That I understand though, but the humping thing I dont. I thought they would fight. Its all very wierd. If anyone has any insights about this, any stories anything that might help me understand, please let me know. I'm very worried that the humping and spraying won't stop even if we get him neutered!!!
Thanks!
Monica
