Amelia's quick correction gave Harmonious no choice but to double back and try the jump again, and the kick and tap with the crop was sufficient incentive for the mare to obey her this time. H.B. was a little unbalanced, but she nevertheless prepared for the jump in the few strides leading up to it, and powerfully launched herself into the air and over the jump.

Because of her hasty preparations and lack of complete balance, she clipped a hoof on the uppermost pole on the way over, but it was so minor a tap that she hardly noticed it, and the pole didn't budge.
