I'm a rep for AWARE/Columbia records, which means that at times I have to help
do local promotions for shows, help sell merch, etc. It's a great resume
booster and it helps me get to see concerts and musicians I might not normally
go to, so I love the job. Anyhow, tonight I was supposed to give some help to
a new Columbia artist by the name of P.J. Olsson, who's the opening act on Bob
Geldof's tour.

Understand this: I know Bob Geldof's name, I know he's Irish, I know he
organized Live Aid, I know he was in the movie The Wall, I know he's had some
controversy in his personal life. That's all I know. Nothing of his music.

So I went to the show (my job tonight was to pass out some free CD samplers of
PJ Olsson after his set), and I figured I wasn't going to stay and see Bob
Geldof. I wasn't in a good mood, I didn't feel too well, and I have class
tomorrow. That was my plan. I was determined to leave early.

...and then Geldof came onstage with his band and started playing. I promise
you, I didn't know a note of his music, but I was totally blown away. Over the
course of a little more than two hours, Geldof played a whole bunch of
beautifully written songs, old and new, and kept the audience amused with
stories about the songs and musings on life in general. Despite having the
flu, his performance was near flawless. He interacted with the audiences, even
acknowledging song requests - it was particularly amusing when someone would
ask for a song that even he didn't remember how to play, and he'd try it
anyway. After the show was over, Geldof came out into the house and signed
every single autograph and took every single picture he was asked, despite not
feeling his best.

If you have a chance to see Geldof on this tour, don't miss it.

By the way, can anyone recommend a couple of his albums to get?

Josh

Hi Josh,

So great that you were able to stay and experience the live energy and passion of Bob and the band. I'm certain that this tour will make instant fans of anybody new to his music. I have a 23 year history with his music myself and was thrilled to see him last month in Toronto.

As far as recommendations, mine would have to include everything he's ever done ;-) but if you're looking for something a little more specific, try his latest CD Sex, Age & Death and his second solo effort, The Vegetarians of Love. These are both excellent records and won't disappoint. Great Songs of Indifference would be a good one to pick up too as it includes a collection of great Boomtown Rats songs as well as some solo stuff.

Hope this helps. Enjoy!

Louise

Yes, Josh, that was a great story and I want to thank you for sharing it too because this is exactly the kind of promotion that Bob needs so that he'll come back and play North America again long before nine years go by! I agree with Louise's choices for his best albums, although I have to say The Happy Club is SUPER too! Cheers and welcome to the fold!

The two Louise mentioned are also the easiest to get your hands on -- they should be available from any major CD outlet. But if you want the whole solo collection -- which is only four albums, after all -- "Happy Club" and "Deep in the Heart of Nowhere" can be found at pretty good prices through Ebay and used CD outlets such as HardToFindCDs.com. Worth the effort, I think -- especially for "Happy Club."

And I, too, really enjoyed hearing how the concert made you a convert!
