I couldn't make it either, as it was midafternoon in New York City and I was desperately trying to complete a talk I had to present that evening. I'm hoping to say hi over the weekend.

To make this a learning experience, I'm sitting here with a mini-globe on my desk, trying to figure out what time, or even what day, it is in Australia. How does time there correlate with time in the UK? Or NYC, for that matter? Aren't you on the other side of the date line?

Hi Franna,
I'm from New Zealand (often we're mistaken for Australians, so I feel qualified to answer this question!) In NZ we are as far away from England that you can get before coming back, so we are exactly 12 hours ahead so It will be Monday morning when we talk in the chat room (a small charge applys if you want the lottery numbers from the future!!)
The East coast of Australia is 2 hours behind us, so it will be 6.30 in the morning there. Australia is a big place so there are different timezones, the West coast (just guessing) will be a couple of hours at least behind that again. More people are likely to come from the East though, as it's more populated there.
I have no idea how all that works with the American continent at all! Hope this is some help!

Sha'uri -

New Zealand! How friggin cool is that? You are definitely the farthest-away person I've ever come into contact with. I've done some hunting around, and found that although it's now 11:30 pm Thursday here on the US East coast, it appears to be 5:30 pm Friday in NZ.

I was able to find some interesting info on world time at www.worldtimezone.com, www.worldtimeserver.com, and ww.travel.com/hk/region/timezone.htm

Please forgive the possibly horrendous stupidity I'm about to exhibit, but - I was taught these Northern/Southern hemisphere distinctions in grade school, are they true?
1) since we're going into winter here, you must be going into summer, 2) my water goes down the drain counterclockwise (I just checked this one); yours goes down the drain clockwise.

I know we're supposed to be chatting about Bob and all, but, well, I'll trust that Bob would find this exchange amusing.

Regards,
Franna

Very true!

Very hard to tell! Mum said if I wanted to try with a basin of water I may as well do the dishes at the same time, so I politely declined!! I know that our weather systems (high and low pressure) turn opposite to those in the north so it's very likely the water does too!
