The first indication I saw that there was trouble with evangelicals was following the disclosure that Republicans had paid for and attended the lesbian sex club in CA. The guy who arranged it eventually paid for the tab but Tony Perkins, bent out of shape over the RNC spending advised followers not to contribute to the RNC but support individual candidates instead. Michael Steele's wild spending sprees have rankled a whole lot of Republicans.

I'm inclined to think there's also the factor that a number of Republican lawmakers have gotten into messy affairs which run contrary to the family values mantra.
