He really existed, and was not some figment of Ken Russell's fevered imagination.

His name was Marcus Aurelius Mausaeus Carausius. Born in what is today either Holland or Belgium. Accused of corruption by Rome in 286 A.D., he seized control of northern Gaul (modern France) and Britain (modern Wales and England and part of modern Scotland.) He remained in control until 293 A.D., when he was defeated at Boulgone. Whereupon, he was murdered by his finance minister, Allectus, who then seized control, until he was defeated and killed in battle at Silchester in 295 A.D. We even know what both men look like, as coinage, from that time period, with their portraits on it, still exists.
