Amanda's character, Lady Sylvia Lamb, in "Lair of the White Worm" an ideal serial killer. Besides the fact that they are always competent in their duties.
One must realize that the English counties did not get an organized force to apprehend criminals till about the 1830's. Until then, and even later, as the forensic sciences had yet to come into use, there were three main ways a criminal could be apprehended. He or she could be recognized by their victim. He or she could be recognized by the police from a description given by their victim. Or, the criminal could leave a trail of evidence from the scene of his or her crime back to where they could be captured. If done of these were done, she would likely to get away with what she was doing.
And if she made the person disappear, there might be a missing persons investigation, but, it is unlikely to become a murder investigation.
Besides, the victim's body can tell the police alot about the criminal. Whether the serial killer is a man or a woman? Whether the serial killer is left or right handed? How tall the serial killer is? And, it is even said, the sexual orientation of the serial killer? And without a body, little of this can be determined.
A serial killer is usually caught through a pattern they display in their killings. If there is more then one police jurisdiction in the Peak District, and if she selected her victims from all these jurisdiction, and if they did not share information with each other, it would take longer to notice a pattern forming.
And we know she selected men, women, boys, and we can presume girls, as her victims, there would be a less likelihood of the police posting a warning about people being careful. Less likely, then if all her victims were females in their 20's with blonde hair.
Until next week and "Circus." Enjoy!
