Letter to The Editor

August 29, 2002

OPEN LETTER TO:

British Home Secretary David Blunkett
Belmarsh Prison Governor Hazel Banks
British Prison Service Headquarters
British Directorate of Prison Medical Services

Dear Secretary, Governor, and Administrators,

I am writing to express my deep concerns regarding the health and
safety of Irish prisoner Aidan Hulme. I am writing an open letter in the press, as I have not had answers to my individual letters sent via e-mail to each of you. I did receive an immediate response from:

Elizabeth Allen
Correspondence Manager
Director General's Office,

advising me that she had “…passed your concerns to the casework unit responsible for Belmarsh.” For that I thank her. If any of you, the above addressees, can have any influence upon the “Casework Unit at Belmarsh”, we urge you to intervene in this emergency situation on Adian Hulme’s behalf.

I understand Aidan Hulme is in need of emergency surgery to save a badly injured leg. I am also aware that a London hospital has offered to perform emergency surgery, but Aidan must first be granted a short compassionate release for the operation.

The reports are that he has gangrene. I once had gangrene, and it is a relentless enemy. Gangrene results in amputation with no treatment. I have a hole in my leg muscle the size of a golf ball. Gangrene is the flesh rotting away; a disgusting death smell is generated. When the death gets into the blood, the leg must go before the patient dies.

I am appealing to you as a concerned American that you please immediately release this young man to the doctors who have offered to perform the surgery and are standing by. Don't let the eyes of the world watch as this young man's condition is allowed to deteriorate further by an uncaring system. Please do not let this man rot away and die.

I urge those of you in control and authority to dispense with the formalities and get immediate medical assistance to Aidan Hulme. This matter transcends any politics, any sectarian debate; it is a desperate humanitarian issue. Another, very young Irish man is in serious health and may lose his leg, or worse, his life.

I urge you who are in authority to have some decency. He is a young man,
accused but not convicted; caught up in the troubles that have for too long been a way of life in Northern Ireland.

Thank you for your assistance at this critical time for Aidan Hulme.

We await your actions on this urgent matter.

Yours sincerely;

Richard Wallace
