Severe Medical Neglect to Irish Prisoner at Belmarsh Prison, London
Thursday November 7, 2002
---------------------------------------
Aidan Hulme (26) was arrested in Belfast in February 2002, and
extradited to Britain to face charges of ‘Conspiracy’ relating to the
arrest of his brother Robert in November 2001. Aidan was not sentenced
and is presently being held on ‘Remand’, guilty of no offense, as a
Category ‘A’ prisoner at Belmarsh Prison, East London. Aiden is being
held under 22-hour lockdown in a windowless cement cell.
Aiden entered the prison on crutches and in pain with severe injuries
from a previous motorcycle accident. He had been receiving regular
medical care in Belfast, including regular physiotherapy and pain
management, prior to his internment at Belmarsh.
Since February Aidan has made repeated complaints relating to pain and
discomfort. In July he was examined by prison doctors, who arranged to
amputate his leg. He was prescribed anti-depressants. In August, a
renowned London orthopedic surgeon visited Aidan and found that
Belmarsh's care is "not comprehensive" and that "(corrective)surgery
should not be delayed". (For details regarding the Medical Report
please see contact information below). The surgeon offered to perform
the operation to save Aidan’s leg, provided his immediate temporary
release could be arranged.
On September 4th, bail was successfully applied for, and granted for
September 20th. A hospital bed was reserved for Aidan for the surgery
and recovery. A contingency condition to Aidan’s bail was imposed by
the court, declaring that Human Rights groups supporting his case not
publicize this pending release. All parties involved, including the
Irish Freedom Committee, honored these terms.
On the evening of the 19th of September, Belmarsh Prison authorities
telephoned Aidan Hulme's mother to inform her they would need 4,000
pounds sterling in cash by morning in order to transport Aidan to and
from the hospital. This outrageous demand was met, with substantial
help from supporters in the US, by the first week in October. Bail was
once more granted, with the stipulation that Aidan’s release be
"immediate".
Today, one month from the date of Belmarsh Prison's receipt of the cash
amount of 4,000 pounds Sterling; and in contempt of a court order to
release him; Aidan remains at Belmarsh Prison.
Despite the substantial cash payment demanded by the British Government
to transport the prisoner to and from the hospital, and the arrangements
made three months ago for Belmarsh doctors to amputate his leg; recent
correspondence from the British Home Office claims that "Belmarsh Prison
are not aware of any complaints Mr. Hulme has raised about his medical
treatment".
Aidan Hulme today remains in great pain, and cannot walk without
assistance. He has no access to braces or special footware to ease his
mobility. He is not being treated properly for severe pain due to the
extensive nerve damage, worsened by months of neglect. Regular
physiotherapy, mandatory in injuries of this nature, has effectively
been denied to him, with only two one-hour sessions allowed over the
past nine months.
