Well, I must say I am not the best when it comes to speech anxiety. I tend to forget everything that I wanted to say, or that I wrote down when I get in front of everyone, so this is why I keep lengthy papers in front of me. Another thing is that I haven't been in an actual setting talking to adults for quite sometime. I haven't been in a communications class for 6 years, and also haven't been in any position that I make speeches or presentations to others for the same amount of time. This is why I am so nervous when I come up in front of class.

All of this aside, the things that help me come over anxiety I could not do in class. This is preparation of your speech and materials that you're going to use. I not only read my speech over and over, I role-play. I stand in front of a mirror and do my speech so I know what I would like to look like. I also get my family involved and do my speech and ask for constructive criticism. They can tell me if I was boring, if my props were too much or too little etc. then I can go back and change a few things if need be. With this I get more practice and more practice…

This comes to the next thing that I cannot do in class and this is have time. I try not to make a speech the night before I have to give it. This will not allow me the time for my preparation I have to do that I stated above. I was always told that a speech done the night before will always sound as though it was done the night before, however I find that a lot of the people in this class does a fine job with speaking and doing their speeches. I don’t know if it is because they have more experience than me, or if I am too worried about doing a good job, or what others think about me.

The next thing is when I was in a position I did not take on a project that I felt I could not do, or gave my supervisor a time that I knew would enable me to get the job done the way I would like it to be. Of course at times we would have to come up with compromises but that is when I kept open communication lines with family and got the help I needed from them so that I may get the job done.

So, I guess to summarize this would be 1. Preparation 2. Role-play 3. Ask family members what they think (they are tougher on you than an audience would be). 4. No procrastination 5. Practice makes perfect. 6. Ask for the time you need to do a quality speech, don’t take on a job that you feel you can’t do, and if all the above isn’t available ask for family’s help so that you can have the time you need to get the job done.
