Subject: One of three worst e-mails

Nelson made a very good point about the "string" created in sending e-mails. It is commonplace for people in my company to use the "reply with history attached" feature when responding to e-mails. If this is done over and over to various persons and passed on, the e-mail eventually becomes very long, and if it has attachments, can really clog up the server. When one goes to print such an e-mail as this, it wastes several sheets of paper and time.

Our text, The Elements of E-mail Style, tells us to "Edit the original message to include only enough information to remind the sender of his or her original question or purpose. If the original message is long, you can place it below your reply message." This in effect is replying with history.

I think we just need to be careful of what we are passing on each time we answer an e-mail - checking to see what is already attached.
